The Cocoon Years (1995-2000)

In the prior
period in my life, where impassioned by the things
that I discovered in college and in the wild forests
of Pennsylvania, I largely shut myself out from pop
culture. I became entranced in independent music, and
was very active in the Philly music scene. Then in
1995, in order to pursue my passion for the forest I
moved to Bradford, PA, and pursued life in the woods.
This started my introduction to the cocoon years.
Living in Bradford, Clarion, and then Fisher, PA, I was largely cutoff from civilization. The internet wasn’t quite what it is today. Or, I wasn’t aware of aspects of it. And we didn’t have television for these years. I lost contact with my friends from Philly and soon I was completely oblivious, not only to pop culture, but to indie culture too. And so I have this weird gap in my life, where lots of good music and movies and sporting events happened. And I missed them.
Would you know it, that as a lifelong Yankees fan, I’ve never seen them win the world series? Ok, I think I watched a bit of the 1978 series. But I was 6! And I don’t remember shit about it. Hard to sympathize I guess, but I’m a diehard fan. What is probably hard to figure is how I was a die hard fan pre-1990 and post-2000, but not inbetween?
With indie music, my awareness gap extended itself well into 2005. And so I’m discovering all kinds of ten year old music that is just awesome. And the worst ever is discovering that band that broke up before I ever heard their music. Korea Girl for example. I’m listening to them now, as I find the music motivating, and I just cannot say how awesome they are. ANd yet, this music that I have is all that they released. total complete bummer...
But it is pretty cool too. I’m like discovering ten years of goodness largely at once. Pretty awesome. pretty awesome.
